The first thing that comes to mind when you say Christmas, is family, and no matter how much you love your family, spending time with them over the holiday season can be draining.
Often we find ourselves slipping into old behavioural patterns, playing a particular role within the family dynamic, or dropping good habits to accommodate and appease others. All in all, it can feel frustrating.
If this is a common feeling for you over the holidays, I invite you shift your focus towards what you can do to stay truthful to who you are and your needs over the break 💕 Now I'm not saying this is easy, it can feel really uncomfortable, as our family are the ones who resist change in us the most, and it feels easier to revert back to the version of us they want. YET the long term benefits are far more rewarding when you give yourself and others a chance to accept and see you as you are.
👉 So, over to you: What does staying true to you these holidays, look like? What roles have you outgrown, and what do you need to do to honour this?
For me I’m exploring offering up new traditions for Christmas with the wider family, acknowledging I’m not the ‘ensure everyone’s having a good time’ person, and spending time by myself each day to ground and recharge.

Have you heard the phrase ‘You’re not your thoughts, you’re the person experiencing them’? When I first heard this it felt too abstract, and it ended up wafting in one ear and out the other.
However, the more work I did around my beliefs and consciously choosing to observe my thoughts, I finally allowed it to sink in.
Thoughts are neurons that fire away in the brain, based off what we see, hear, and feel. In a sense they’re a representation of your experiences.
Over time your brain makes a map of your experiences and stores them as neural pathways that it directs you along. It does this to save energy as well as to protect you from any future ‘threats’.
This is where the 'separating yourself from your thoughts' part comes in. Because your brain has coded your experiences (right from childhood), you unconsciously live inside the patterns, unaware that they’re influencing everything from how you feel to how you think and behave. The more that you allow the pattern to occur the more habitual it becomes, eventually making you feel trapped inside your thoughts and in turn believing that they are you.
But they aren’t. Thoughts are simply patterns based on previous experiences, that you have the power to change through the act of awareness. The more you step back and observe your thoughts the more aware you become of the underlying beliefs that created them in the first place – putting you in the position to decide whether or not they are true or useful for you to have any more.
This is where true freedom sits 🍃.

Often when we start trusting ourselves, and truly listening in on our own needs and desires, it can feel disconcerting - as though we’re lost in the woods with no clear markings on which direction to take.
When we feel like this the default response is to stiffen up and freak out. We fall into thinking:
- We should already be two steps ahead of ourselves.
- We should already know what’s next.
- We should already be back up and running full steam.
And if we're not…we’re failing.
Well, what if this wasn’t the case? What if instead of being lost and failing, you were forging new unchartered territory? Territory that’s more aligned with who you truly are – free from the beliefs of others and stories around who you should be?
What if that feeling of disconcertment was the first sign of a new horizon, full of previously unseen possibilities guiding you closer to yourself? 🧡

I used to put perfectionist as a character strength on my CV when I was at school, and it was something I wore as a badge of honour as I got older. I was proud to be seen as perfect.
But the funny thing was I knew it was an illusion, that there is no such thing as perfect, yet I still aimed for it. It had become an expectation I’d unconsciously set for myself that I had to maintain in everything I did.
When I finally challenged this belief and it's role in my life, I realised I’d attached the word perfect to being the best, and it was causing me so much unnecessary pain…
- down time was filled with things I could do to improve on,
- achievement was brushed off with ‘well of course I should’ve got that’, and,
- activities were assessed on how successful or worthwhile they’d be, over and above simply having fun.
Because here's the thing, when you claim yourself as a perfectionist you become paralysed by the fear of not being good enough, and you end up placing your entire sense of worth on being productive and successful 24/7, and in getting things 'right' all of the time.
As a result you end up hiding in order to feel safe, and this is why people who aim for perfect continually feel dissatisfied.
I wanted to share this with you as you approach the end of the year, because it's typically when you can become stressed and anxious over getting things right, and judging yourself harshly for not meeting expectations - whether it’s in your relationships, your work, your body, or your activities.
